Wow-- I loved the way you kept us wondering for so long what dark thing the narrator had stumbled into.
The marriage itself? Abuse?
But then the friendship that seemed to be repairing the awful thing... was actually the beginning of being pulled into the awful thing!
I loved the way you mentioned avoiding the 'c' word, because by then the reader suspects that you DO mean cult, and it was.
Terrific story!
